ROMAN GLASS PERFUME BOTTLE

This is an ancient vessel, often over 1500-2000 years old, made using early glassblowing techniques. Its delicate, iridescent surface reflects the ageing of the glass over the centuries, an example of the skill and artistry of Roman glassmakers.

When the glass bottle arrived in the studio it was broken into many fragile small glass fragments. Some losses were revealed after the initial dry assembly of the fragments, which needed to be reconstructed. Reconstructing the missing sections became the core of the intervention, balancing the objects integrity, extreme fragility, and its current decorative function.
